There are new, improved headphones, the panorama shot effect looks good and neat extras like swiping down the screen to refresh the email list are all good to have on this bigger screen.

One of the biggest competitors to the iPhone 5 is Nokia's recently announced Nokia 920. Packing the latest iteration of Windows Phone and an innovative design - not to mention availability in a rather bright yellow colour - the Nokia 920 is one for those who want something a little different to the crowd.
It packs some iPhone-beating features too, including one of the only screens on the market to pip Apple's Retina display in clarity (332 pixels per inch versus Apple's 326ppi). It's considerably heavier though, and while Windows Phone apps are slowly catching up with Android and iOS, you might have to wait a while for the biggest apps to land in the Windows Phone Marketplace.
It seems a while in gadget lifespan since the HTC One X exploded onto the mobile gadget market as the world's first quad-core phone. Now there are plenty boasting similar specs, but we're still unsure if the iPhone is one of them.
As is the norm from Apple, there was no talk of cores or processor speeds at the iPhone keynote, and no further details have been published on its website. However, it's thought Apple's A6 processor remains a dual-core chip - albeit an improved one to that from the iPhone 4S. While the average consumer may not be able to notice the difference in day-to-day use between quad-core and dual-core, the HTC One X's extra power will certainly put more oomph behind graphic-intensive gaming and heavy multi-tasking.
The one chip in the HTC One X's rather lovely looking armour is its on-board storage. You can only get it in 32GB - with no chance of expansion. Of course the iPhone doesn't offer expansion either, but you can pick up the it up in a choice of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB.
Possibly the biggest challenger depending on your point of view to the iPhone 5 is the Samsung Galaxy S3. Following on from the huge success of the S2, this phone won a lot of upgraders' hearts with its flawless spec sheet and top performance in reviews.
On paper, it's a balancing act between the two. In many areas, such as battery life and camera, they are equally matched. But then the S3 has that whopping love-it-or-hate-it 4.8-inch screen, NFC for contactless pairing and payments, and of course the quad-core processor we are beginning to expect.
However, the screen doesn't quite match the quality of the iPhone 5 and it's both thicker and heavier - despite being made of plastic. And there lies the biggest disappointment of the S3 - quality product on the inside, plastic shell on the outside, but it has good performance.
LG may have been a little quieter on the mobile front recently, but its 4X HD flagship handset has recently joined the quad-core party alongside the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X. Taking its design cues from the LG Prada phone, it has a more rather angular design compared to the iPhone's curved corners.
The screen is considerably larger than the iPhone at 4.7 inches and it has a bigger battery too, which on paper promises a longer 3G talk-time of up to 10 hours.
All this aside, probably one of the biggest selling points of the 4X HD is its price. It's available on tariffs from around £20 per month - much less than the eye-watering prices you can expect the iPhone 5 to cost especially in the UK, or any of its similarly specced competitors for that matter.
If your going to weight or you want something slightly different, then this could be it. The Xperia T Sony's newest handset isn't even on the market yet, but it's already looking to be Sony's best handset yet.
Its camera dwarfs that of the iPhone 5 with a whopping 13-megapixel sensor and offers good connectivity with other gadgets around your home for easy sharing via DLNA or NFC. The Xperia T also packs a newly designed Walkman app and top Sony sound tech for good music quality on the go.
But how will the included headphones fare against Apple's new EarPods? We'll have to wait and see...
Samsung Galaxy Note 2. If you like to work on your phone, memos and notes as such, then this may or may not be for you. Many are still not quite sure whether the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is a big phone or small tablet, but whatever it is, its huge 5.5-inch screen is either going to be a deal maker or deal breaker.
While it might be a squeeze to fit in your pocket, it does offer a whole lot of specs and tech for your money, with a quad-core processor, eight-megapixel camera, NFC chip and a strong battery life. It's also one of the few Android smartphones in our list that will come running the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box - refreshing to say the least.
As with many gadgets, sometimes your biggest competitor can be your predecessor. Now much cheaper both SIM free and on contract, the iPhone 4S is a tempting proposition for those not bothered about having the latest design, or for those wanting an iPhone at a lower price.
As of 19 September, all iPhone users with a 3GS or above will get the iPhone 5's iOS 6 operating system upgrade for free, which brings with it new features like the new Apple Maps and an improved Siri (4S and above).
An operating system update like this can make a phone feel like a new handset anyway, plus the iPhone 4S isn't exactly poorly specced.
